This is the time of year when I start to gather all my sewing and crafting supplies together to make gifts for the holidays. Although I have been sewing off and on for many years, I still have to refer back to the basics and pull out one of my sewing books to guide me through the process. I have a list of books that you can refer to in my Design Library.
One of my favorite sewing books is Sewing Essentials because it covers everything from how to use a sewing machine to how to sew a zipper. Whenever I teach a basic sewing class, I usually refer to my stitches that were sewn during my time in fashion school. If you are planning to do some sewing this holiday season, here’s a quick visual reference of a few hand sewing stitches that you might need to sew to start and finish your projects. These stitches were sewn on muslin fabric.
Pick Stitch

Useful for a decorative stitch or hem.
Blanket Stitch
Useful for creating a decorative edge or finish. (My crochet project).

Catch Stitch

Useful for hemming or finishing. This one takes some practice.

Hand Basting Stitch

Useful to keep fabric and pattern in place before cutting or sewing, but can be used as a decorative stitch.

I used to sew a lot many years ago in highschool. Very rewarding hobby.
