Do you know your costume? Whether you are making costumes for cosplay, halloween or a party, it’s a good idea to know its origin. A few years ago, I had to make a historical costume for a class project that focused on the Crinoline period. During this time, women wore the hoop skirts to alter their waistline. My challenge was to create a modern day hoop skirt that was wearable and fashionable. First, I had to decide who would wear this skirt and for what purpose. During that time period also called the Victoria era, Charles Frederick Worth redesigned the hoop skirts for Queen Victoria and Princess Pauline. Those dresses represented royalty.

Well, for starters, I sketched out my costume design and headed to Joann Fabrics and purchased some crinoline, a coarse stiff fabric of cotton that is used to stiffen garments. I also created a bodice with flounce sleeves that I sewn to the skirt. During this period, the necklines were high and laced without collars so I crocheted a collar to the neckline. This was a fun and creative project for me. So, when you are creating your costumes for your next event be creative and use non-traditional materials too. I also spent quite some time on pinterest to get some inspiration and other ideas to complete my project.
So what do you know about your design? Each costume originates from a historical perspective. For example, say you want to wear a goddess costume. You can see here that it dates back to the Greek Doric chiton.

Happy Costuming!
