Most people don’t really think about who designed the print on a fabric. Before I enrolled into fashion and design school, I’d never really thought about it either. If I liked a nice design on product or blouse, I would just buy it and think nothing else of it. Mostly, when someone decides to make a garment, they buy a commercial pattern, some fabric and sew it together.
Well, in the fashion industry, when an independent designer makes a garment, they sketch a design, shop for the right print pattern or purchase it directly from the manufacturer. But, who designed the print on the fabric? The textile designer – known as a surface pattern designer who makes artwork that is printed on fabrics or sold to specific companies for product design. Well, that’s what I have learned how to do. I design print patterns that you will normally see on clothes, pillows, phone cases, paper and more. The above photo is my surface pattern design.

Hi Lisa! Great introduction to what surface design is! I’m trying to get into doing that, myself. It extends beyond fabric, too, to pretty much all “surfaces”, like wallpaper, wrapping paper, and etc. Lots of uses for those pretty patterns.
